Broom-Making Private Workshop

In this class, participants will learn how to make a functional floor broom from start to finish. You will leave the workshop with at least one completed broom, and hopefully, the ability to make more.

We will begin with a short introduction to broom-making and its history. We will then jump into selecting our fiber, and putting it into buckets to soak/soften. While the fiber soaks, we will shape our wooden handles from blanks provided by the instructor, using draw knives & sandpaper. This portion will include a conversation about draw knives, wood grain, and finishing.

Next, with the handles shaped, we will jump into the process of adding the sweeping head, using the pre-soaked sorghum. We will finish by learning how to stitch clamp/flatten the fiber. This segment will be interspersed with insights on technique, broom size, uses, etc.

Cost is $215 per person with a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 14.
