Class Experience

In Part 2 of Discovering the Self, we explore the many facets of self-portraiture by examining our presence, emotion, word, and more. We will explore a single self-portrait, from miniature studies to larger scale painting, working in layers, using a mix of techniques and mediums.

“I have a face, but a face is not what I am”. The self-portrait can represent our features, but more importantly, it defines the deeper person within. We’ll find inspiration through contemplation and delving further into defining the self with primary materials, such as journals, torn book pages, personal clothing, objects of meaning, hidden or exposed in our painting. Using the momentum in our bodies, we will draw, paint, inscribe, scrape, moving our medium to express our being.

Mon Kaczyk's mixed media approach stems from a diverse education, allowing Mon to create in both two- and three-dimension. After receiving a BFA in design and photography from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia and Rome, Mon explored in-depth workshops in encaustics, surface design, and metals. Mon merges studio time with a 40-year career in design, art direction, and teaching. After several years in Boston, Mon chose the Green Mountains as the place to raise a family, start a business and create art. Awarded honors in design and contemporary quilts, today Mon displays artwork in select juried shows and group exhibitions. Learn more at monkaczyk.com.
