Class Experience

Learn to loosen up your technique and visually edit the landscape to create more dynamic work in acrylic or oil.

We’ll paint outside on the Artistree campus (weather permitting) and compose, block-in, and complete a painting with large brushes, palette knives and various crude tools to help reduce the temptation to be fixated on detail. You will learn to simplify shapes, tones and colors to suggest a scene without painting in every twig, leaf and blade of grass.

If weather chases us inside we’ll work from the windows, and/or a large visual reference.

This workshop is best for painters who have already started and have their general supplies to paint in oil or acrylic. It will probably be frustrating for a total beginner. Intermediate to advanced painters suggested.

Sue Schlabach is an artist and photographer with over 25 years of background as a Creative Director in art publishing. Her creative practices include en plein air painting, fiber art, watercolor, and mixed media design. On painting outdoors, she loves the immediacy of changing light and weather, and a finite amount of time to choose a composition and get to work. She loves to use large brushes to achieve abstraction and movement. Sue has been painting en plein air with ArtisTree for many years and exhibits regularly in the gallery. See her work at www.SueSchlabach.com.
