WoodFire (Going up)

Have you seen our woodfired work around the studio? Want an opportunity to be a part of a woodfiring and further your knowledge in different firing methods of ceramics? Now is your chance to learn from one of the woodfire masters of the east coast, Chris Gustin. Chris Gustin is a ceramic artist whose works are inspired by a connection to the human figure. In 1997, Chris Gustin and his students built a three chamber Anagama kiln that he now shares with artists from across the country.

This course consists of two zoom classes with Chris Gustin (September 19th & September 26th from 7-9pm), one in person class with Elycia at Artshack (October 11th 7-9pm), and a 3-day firing experience on site in Massachusetts with Chris and his team (November 10th-12th). Chris’ two zoom classes will cover the history of Anagama kilns, surface decoration, and his extensive knowledge of form building for the Anagram kiln. The third class will meet to discuss the etiquette of wood firing and plan for our trip in November.

The firing experience will run the weekend of November 10th-12th. Please be aware that you are expected to work at the firing! It is hot and the shifts are long! Each shift requires 8 hours standing in front of the kiln feeding wood directly into the fire, so it maintains temperatures as high as 2000 plus degrees. It is a labor of love and although it is hard work, the process is enchanting. This course is the real deal! We will offer a limited amount of space for a ride from Artshack to Chris' property located in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. We will be spending the weekend on his property while we each take a shift in this 24/7 firing. Trips to nearest grocery stores will be made, as well there will be one day of provided meals. There are bathrooms, showers, and a kitchen available for use in the main house. We are looking forward to the opportunity to deepen our community and learn new methods of ceramics together! Please direct all questions for this course to elycia@artshackbrooklyn.org.
