Class Experience

Beginning/Intermediate Level Technique: Song Creation & Recording. Join award winning sound engineer, Jess Jewell and artistic instructor, Kelly Bidstrup-Graham, as they guide the class through the process of writing, recording, and producing your own song! By the end of the three-day class, students will have published their own musical single! Class meets Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from 9am-12pm. This class is for ages 13-18. Minimum enrollment 5, maximum 12.

CLASS MEETS: WEDNESDAY, THURDAY, FRIDAY - June 8-10 - 9am-1pm @ BackStory Theatre (555 Burbank St, Unit Q, Broomfield, CO 80020 - we are the last unit in the last building on your left as you enter the parking lot.) Due to COVID, masks must be worn by all participants at all times. Please visit our COVID information page at https://www.backstorytheatre.org/covid for updates.

Students should wear clothes they can move freely in and closed-toed shoes. Flip-flops and other slip-on shoes present tripping hazards in class. Please bring a WATER bottle to every class. For applicable classes, once scripts are distributed, they should also be brought to every class. Students may use worksheets, focus games & activities, and performance methods to develop a deep understanding of applied technique. Class details and updates will be sent by the director throughout the session to the email used to register for class. PLEASE DO NOT SEND SNACKS WITH NUTS OR ANYTHING "CRUMBLY". WATER ONLY - SUGARY & DYED BEVERAGES MAY DAMAGE COSTUMES & PROPS. PLEASE SAVE THIS INFORMATION & CLASS DATES/TIMES WHEN REGISTERING.

Sample Class Format

  • Day 1: Lyric Writing, Music composition & Intro to recording
  • Day 2: Practice & Recording
  • Day 3: Editing (finish recording, adjustments, listen to final product).
  • Snack break each day approximately 10-10:20am (will eat outside weather permitting)

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations cannot be refunded within 48 hours (or after) class start. A 6% cancellation fee applies to any requests made more than 48 hours in advance or a 100% class credit may be issued.


What To Bring

  • Laptop or ipod/tablet to take notes, explore software on your own
  • Non-messy snack
  • Water bottle (no sugary/dyed drinks in studio)
