Class Experience

Have you ever been given sheet music and weren't sure where to get started? Join Suessical Assistant Music Director Intern Nathan George in this class for some guidance! At the end of this course, students will be proficient in basic music theory, ear training, and sight reading, enabling them to be more self-sufficient in learning music. Beginner and intermediate students alike are invited to develop their independent musicianship which will benefit them in their future musical endeavors be it theatre, choir, or singing in general!

Class meets for 2 Weeks - Mon-Fri from 9:00am - 12:00pm at BackStory Theatre (555 Burbank St, Unit Q).

Notes

Students should wear clothes they can move freely in and closed-toed shoes. Flip-flops and other slip-on shoes present tripping hazards in class.

Please bring a water bottle, pencil, and highlighter to every class.

COVID-19 has presented our community with unexpected challenges and opportunities. BackStory Theatre is committed to rising to those challenges and creating space both online and in-studio for creativity, confidence-building, and joy!

What you'll learn

  • Introduce vocal technique, major scale, 4/4 rhythm, the musical alphabet, and the key of C. Practice finding scale degree 1 ("do") when establishing a key, and sight sing stepwise melodies. Continue this, and in the second class introduce the major triad.
  • Introduce the harmonic minor scale, dotted quarter rhythms, 3/4 rhythms. Continue solidifying the major key and begin including skips of a 3rd and the scale degree 1-5 interval.  In this second class, introduce the minor, diminished, and augmented triads (parallel on the same starting notes)
  • Introduce perfect and major intervals and the tunes we can use to find them. Introduce syncopation, 16th note patterns, and intervals of a 4th and 5th in sight singing. Introduce the order of sharps and learn how to identify sharp keys and writing them out. Continue to solidify the harmonic minor scale and the other triads (begin working on chord identification).
  • Introduce perfect and minor intervals going down the major scale. Introduce harder 16th patterns and strengthen chord/interval identification. Introduce the melodic minor scale and the order of flats (identifying flat keys and how to write them out).
  • Work hard on intervals and identification (learning the difference between consonant, dissonant, and open intervals). Continue to work on key signatures, scales, and chords. Introduce 6/8 time. In the second class, introduce minor keys.
  • Practice and lots of sight singing/application for all the skills we worked on. Sing a lot and start practicing more ensemble/group harmony exercises, as well as solo melodies.

Other Things To Know

Homework

There may be some work outside of class, such as looking over brief sight singing examples to practice what we go over in class. I'm also planning on having short "quizzes" for the students just so I can assess where they are individually in understanding. Time permitting, these will be done in class but if not they may need to take it home and finish it.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations cannot be refunded within 48 hours (or after) class start. A 6% cancellation fee applies to any requests made more than 48 hours in advance or a 100% class credit may be issued.
