Class Experience

Join Pirates of Penzance costumer Amber Tyler and her son Jack Tyler as they guide you through sewing basics to create your own vest! All experiences welcome!

Beginner and Intermediate skills for drafting, fitting, sewing and altering. We will work around a character story you create to make a costume piece that bring your character to life.


Day 1: Drafting a design, muslin fitting 

Day 2: Patterning, cutting, hand stitching, machine basics, fitting our thrifted piece to our design 

Day 3: Sewing

Day 4: Sewing, fitting, maybe makeup and hair design drawing if extra time allows.  

Day 5: Finishing techniques and photo shoot!


Class meets Mon-Fri from 9:00am - 12:00pm at BackStory Theatre (555 Burbank St, Unit Q).


Notes

Students should wear clothes they can move freely in and closed-toed shoes. Flip-flops and other slip-on shoes present tripping hazards in class.

Please bring a water bottle, pencil, and highlighter to every class.

Other Things To Know

Homework

Students will need to provide a thrifted or repourposed piece of clothing to use as a base for their project. Hopefully, students may want to keep working on drawing and hand stitching at home. But it won’t be required.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations cannot be refunded within 48 hours (or after) class start. A 6% cancellation fee applies to any requests made more than 48 hours in advance or a 100% class credit may be issued.


What To Bring

  • A Thrifted piece of clothing to use as base (For Tuesday)
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Paper
  • Water bottle
  • Non-crumbly/messy snack
  • OPTIONAL SUPPLIES to Bring/Loan or Donate: A sewing machine, any scrap fabric, buttons.
  •  Optional -Fabric, old retired costumes or clothing to include, finishing pieces like ribbon, lace buttons, etc.
