This class for newborn to precrawling babies and their grownup(s) contains dozens of yoga-inspired movements, postures, songs, rhymes and activities designed to support baby’s development. Each class is filled with calming, nurturing ways to enhance bonding, soothe the inevitable cranky moments, and improve baby’s sleep.
Babies participate while on their backs, tummies, or held in loving arms. For grownups, this class is a special opportunity to meet other parents and caregivers, get support, and learn about baby’s emerging personality.
Grownups will also get to do a bit of postpartum-appropriate yoga themselves, including strength- and flexibility-building postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques to address common physical complaints and mental/emotional stressors during the new-parent period. Most appropriate from 6-weeks until baby is mobile. Moms, dads, grandparents or other caregivers welcome. No previous yoga experience necessary; be prepared/dressed for for movement.
• Baby Yoga & Play classes do use yoga mats, but most venues have enough to lend if you’d rather not carry one. • Please bring a small blanket to cover our mats/blankets and a small toy to use during class. • Please wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that are not too loose. While this is a movement class, it is not what most would describe as a workout, so full yoga/exercise attire is not necessary. Wear clothing that will allow you to sit on the floor and move around easily (jeans are typically not ideal). • Expect your baby to be a baby and know that their voice is welcome. Crying, eating, diaper changes, and sleeping is all perfectly fine during class. • Please bring only water or milk/formula in closed top containers into the yoga classroom. Breastfeeding is always welcome.
Cheverly United Methodist Church
2801 Cheverly Ave
4th Floor (yoga room)
Cheverly, MD 20785
• The church is located at 2801 Cheverly Avenue, where Cheverly Avenue meets Forest Road. A dedicated parking lot is located directly behind the church, and we prefer that you park there. Once parked, follow the sidewalk to the driveway at the opposite side of the church (just past the smaller, stone church sign) and walk up the short flight of steps to the double doors. Go through the double doors, then up the stairs to the left. The yoga room will be in front of you. • If you have a stroller, you may leave it tucked in the breezeway to the right at the foot of the outside stairs if you prefer not to carry it up. The instructor can provide you with a stroller lock if you wish to secure it, but please bring all valuables indoors. If your stroller is small and light, you may also bring it upstairs with you. There is a large space outside the classroom doorway where it can be left. No strollers are allowed in the main yoga space. • Upon arrival, please remove shoes and leave them in the carpeted space outside the yoga room to preserve the lovely floors! • **There is some street parking available near the church. If you cannot manage the walk from the parking lot, you may park on the street. However, those spaces are used by people who live in the houses nearby and they--and the church--prefer we not use them unless it is necessary. Thanks for helping us be good neighbors! •
