Description
***This class has no live meetings, by default all ASYNCHRONOUS classes are set for Monday 12pm EST, but we do not actually meet at this time. We just need to put something in the blank!***
An engaging adventure about the history of time and space by Professor Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking.
Did you know that our bodies are, quite literally, made up of atoms that are created in the stars? The very matter of our bodies began in the explosion of stars! The science to truly understand this is fascinating. It is complicated, but certainly within the grasp of most middle school students.
Before the first class, students are required to obtain a copy of George and the Big Bang by Stephen and Lucy Hawking. It can be found at most libraries, bookstores, or online shops like Amazon or Half-Priced Books.
Students will be expected to explore approximately 2 hours of content per week (reading and watching videos) and spend 2-3 hours per week completing assignments (challenge missions, quizzes, and discussions). This class is perfect for younger students (see DISCLAIMER below), and is NOT writing intensive. Also, if this is your student’s first course, learning to navigate the Canvas LMS system may require time and parental assistance the during first couple of weeks of the course.
This course will walk students through a history of time. It will use readings, videos, labs and art to help students understand what we know about how the Universe began.
Students will explore the various elements of the cosmos including (but not limited to) stars, black holes, planets, and comets. They dive into quantum mechanics, learn about the LHC, and explore M-theory. Students will learn about and practice skills related to atoms, matter, mass, temperature, surface area, gravity, time, and more.
Each week, the students will have a reading assignment, comprehension questions and a choice of either a scientific or artistic assignment.
Notes:
This is an ASYCHRONOUS CLASS - which means that there will be no required live online meetings. There will be one optional meeting during the last class. The exact time will be selected by enrolled students via poll during the first week of class.
This class has flexible due dates. This means that students should complete one module per week, but it doesn't matter which day they submit their assignments, and it is okay if they get a little behind one week so long as they catch up the next. Students are expected to roughly stay on schedule because their timely participation is crucial for the other students to be able to participate.
To participate in Groovy Kids classes students will need:
1) A computer with either Windows, IOS, Android, Chrome, or Linux operating system.
2) A high-speed internet connection. If the student plans to participate in the optional Zoom classes they need 1.5 minimum Mbps, 2.5 Mbps for HD video. Otherwise, if their connection can stream Youtube videos, they're good!
3) If students plan to participate in the optional live class, they need either a USB headset with microphone or telephone (mobile or landline will work)
4) A printer (optional but highly recommended).
5) A device, like a smartphone, that can take a digital picture.
6) Access to word processing software like Microsoft Word, Pages, or Google Docs. Documents must be submitted as either a doc, docx, or PDF file to be graded. This class is a project-based class, so the student will benefit from having basic craft supplies (paper, pencil, markers, etc). Each week there is at least one project the student can complete utilizing only pencil and paper, so the following supplies are not required to enjoy the course, but if it is in the budget, they would make for a more in-depth learning experience.
