Class Experience

Do you love to write? Are you interested in journalism? Have you always wanted to see your name in print? Then this workshop is for you!


Journalism and Media Literacy 101 is hosted by IndyKids, a non-profit that provides news for kids, by kids. For ages 10-14.  Participating students will have a chance to write a short piece that will be published in IndyKids' newspaper! We will begin at 4:30pm but feel free to come as early as 4pm to have some snacks.

Notes

A limited number of need-based, reduced-fee and full tuition scholarships are also available.

What you'll learn

Students will learn:

  • who and what IndyKids is
  • what journalism is and how it’s done
  • a brief intro to social justice issues
  • the different parts of a news article
  • how to come up with and pitch an idea for a news story
  • media literacy skills in an era of misinformation
  • tips for writing in a manner that is detailed and specific
  • students will have an opportunity to write an entry for “Snapshot of My Life” which will get published in our Fall issue.

What To Bring

  • A notebook and pen or pencil. 
  • A laptop is optional
