Ancient Art of Raku

8 - 15 yrs

Description

During this camp we will explore a slightly modified Japanese technique known as Raku firing. Using a specialized Raku clay body we will focus on wheel-throwing, hand building and other sculptural techniques. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be wet-clay days as we create the objects for the firing process. Thursday and Friday are dedicated to glazing and firing the pieces. Raku is a very exciting process that involves taking the work out of the kiln while it is at maximum temperature (around 1900 degrees Farenheit!) and then covering it with combustible materials (sawdust, newspaper, etc.) to achieve unpredictable results that are unique to each piece.

Camp hours are 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

All materials are safe and non-toxic.

Notes:

Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided, please let us know if your child has any dietary restrictions or allergies.

Aprons are available.

Thursday and Friday, there will be finished pieces to take home so please bring boxes and bags to transport items.
