Scouts BSA Merit Badges

Looking for a unique and memorable experience for your Scouts? Lollypop Farm is proud to offer workshops that give scouts hands-on, behind-the-scenes experiences centered on the Girl Scouts of the USA and Scouts BSA badge requirements.

Veterinary Medicine Badge:
Scouts will learn the roles, responsibilities, and training required of veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians. Scouts will tour the Klingenstein Veterinary clinic and observe the clinic staff as they provide medical care to the animals at Lollypop Farm. Scouts will be awarded the veterinary medicine merit badge after completion of a report of their visit. No prerequisites are needed for this merit badge.

Dog Care Badge:
Scouts will learn the history of dog domestication and the characteristics of major breed groups. Scouts will learn about responsible dog ownership, including house-training, obedience training, socialization, and care. Scouts will tour the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic and learn about the medical needs of dogs and basic first aid. To meet the requirements of this merit badge, scouts must present evidence that they have cared for a dog for at least 2 months. Scouts will be awarded the dog care merit badge after completion of a report of their visit.

Nature Badge:
Scouts will learn about the relationships among the natural factors in an ecosystem, such as plants, animals, and other organisms. Scouts will create a field notebook and identify the required number of birds, mammals, fish, plants, and soil/rocks. Scouts will construct a bird feeding station and record which birds use it for 1 month. Scouts will be awarded the nature merit badge after completing their field notebooks. No prerequisites are needed for this merit badge. Portions of this workshop will take place outdoors, so please dress accordingly.

Bird Study Badge:
Scouts will learn the uses of bird study and the terms used when describing birds. Scouts will learn how to use and care for binoculars for bird watching. Scouts will create a field notebook and identify at least 20 species of wild birds. Scouts will construct a bird feeder to attract wild birds. Scouts will learn about birds' different adaptations, the functions of their songs and calls, and the conservation status of birds. After completing their field notebooks, Scouts will be awarded the bird study merit badge. No prerequisites are needed for this merit badge. Portions of this workshop will take place outdoors, so please dress accordingly.

Reptile and Amphibian Study Badge:
Scouts will learn the characteristics and habitat types of 10 reptiles and amphibians. Scouts will learn the roles of reptiles and amphibians in their ecosystems and the differences between major groups of reptiles and amphibians. Scouts can identify different species of reptiles and amphibians and discuss them within a group. Scouts will be awarded the reptile and amphibian study merit badge after presenting evidence that they have completed ONE of the following: maintain a reptile or amphibian for one month, OR study a reptile or amphibian weekly for a period of 3 months. No prerequisites are needed for this merit badge.

Follow-up: Observe 3 months or care for 1 month

Fish and Wildlife Badge:
Scouts will learn the purposes of fish and wildlife management, the practices used by fish and wildlife professionals, and the problems they face. Scouts will construct and erect 2 bird feeders and regularly check them. Scouts will observe and record at least 25 species of wildlife*. Scouts will determine the age of 5 fish species from scale samples. No prerequisites are needed for this merit badge. Portions of this workshop will take place outdoors, so please dress accordingly.

To secure your preferred workshop date, a $40 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking. While we strive to accommodate every troop's schedule, please note that registration does not guarantee date availability until your request is confirmed by our team. We appreciate your flexibility as we work to provide the best experience for your Boy Scouts.

The main building of our Fairport campus is ADA-accessible. Sections of our outdoor farm walk have uneven, graded, or loose terrain and may not be accessible to all guests. If you have any specific accessibility requirements or need assistance, please contact us beforehand so we can plan accommodations.

Lollypop Farm houses a diverse and changing population of animals, the foods these animals eat, and the substrates used for their housing. Exposure to various animal species is an inherent part of the program. Lollypop Farm advises that individuals with severe animal allergies refrain from visiting the shelter. Those with mild allergies participate at their own risk. Lollypop Farm cannot prevent exposure to any specific animal species.

Lollypop Farm utilizes peanut butter for daily animal enrichment. I acknowledge that Lollypop Farm cannot guarantee an environment free of peanuts or trace allergens on surfaces, equipment, or animals. Lollypop Farm does not recommend participation for individuals with peanut allergies.

Lollypop Farm feeds hay to some animal species, uses straw in animal bedding, and houses some animals outside in pastures. Lollypop Farm cannot guarantee an environment free of exposure to these materials or the outdoor environment. Lollypop Farm does not recommend participation for individuals with hay or other environmental allergies.

Lollypop Farm cannot guarantee that guests will not come into contact with pet allergens or nuts. Field trips are not recommended for children with allergies to pets, pet dander, or nuts.
