Class Experience

How can we understand the past if the people who designed it can’t tell us what they did and why they did it?

How do objects tell us about the past and how can we curate exhibitions of objects for museums?

Watch out Indiana Jones! We’ve got a camp that’s part coding, part architecture, part storytelling, and part archaeological exploration!

Participants will start the week playing the roles of architects and designers. They’ll collaborate to imagine and build civilizations, using Minecraft as a CAD tool. Mysterious structures and indecipherable languages are encouraged!

Then, they’ll pick up their archaeological tools and “excavate” a civilization built by another team. They’ll explore structures, imagine why they were built, and try to understand the history of the place they’re excavating. They’ll also use the knowledge and artifacts they gather to curate museum exhibitions about the civilizations they’ve “discovered” and share them with other campers!

Campers will:

Learn about Design and Design Thinking
Learn and practice coding in Minecraft
Practice key parts of the architectural design process
Use Minecraft as a CAD tool to creative architectural models
Engage in world-building and creative storytelling
Learn about museums and curation processes
Learn to use Minecraft as a design tool for exploring and addressing real-world problems
Use the design thinking process as a means of addressing the challenges they face in this course
Refine the human interaction skills used in design thinking, including empathy, teamwork, brainstorming, prototyping, and testing and refining ideas
Improve their coding skills as they learn more refined ways to interact with Minecraft
Develop collaborative online skills
Create and present projects online

Campers will build on the MODA Minecraft server, meaning that participants will be able to continue to access their work and keep collaborating with one another and with others once their camp ends.

Your camper will need to have access to Minecraft Java Edition in order to participate in this camp.Java edition is compatible only with Macs and PCs. Chromebooks, tablets, and phones will not work.

Loved:

Structured activities and the videos.

Improvements:

I feel the instructor did not have a great handle on motivating or redirecting boys in this age group. There was more independent work time and less structured tasks. Also it seemed that the skill level should have been narrowed down to reduce the gap. Students who were more experienced were left waiting around for students who were struggling a large part of the day.

Loved:

I loved that my son was inspired to create after viewing different cities.

Improvements:

I did not like the links to online gaming. There are a lot of parents who still do not let their children play online games at this age. My son had access to other games not recommended by the instructor as well with the links.
