Class Experience

It can be hard to get your cat, dog, fish, or guinea pig to do what you want it to do — unless it’s robotic and you’ve designed it, built it, and programmed it yourself!

In this camp, young designers will imagine the perfect pet, build it using robotics kits and household material, and program it to do what they want it to do! Talking dog? No problem! Cat that lets you know how it’s feeling? You can do that!

We’ll build pets using robotics kits, servo motors, and audio players in this camp. We’ll also learn or improve our drag-and-drop programming skills as we “train” our pets to do what we want them to do. And, because not everything works perfectly the first time, we’ll practice resilience and iterative design as we refine our pet bots over the course of the week.

If you’ve already participated in a robotics camp at MODA this summer, no worries! We’ll be using sensors and motors that we didn’t use in other camps, so you can improve the skills you already have or add some new ones

Campers will:
Learn basic robotics skills
Learn or improve drag and drop coding skills
Learn how to turn an idea into into an object
Learn how design, engineering, and coding are used together to create a robot
Practice giving feedback to other campers and receiving it themselves
Practice the engineering skills necessary to build their pet bot

Required Materials:
Registrants are required to purchase a robotics kit ($100) at registration to be shipped to camper's home
Basic art supplies like scissors, colored paper, markers, glue (for cardboard), crayons, pencils, notepad, and paint
A computer or tablet with a reliable internet connection in order to connect to camp each day

Loved:

Structured activities and the videos.

Improvements:

I feel the instructor did not have a great handle on motivating or redirecting boys in this age group. There was more independent work time and less structured tasks. Also it seemed that the skill level should have been narrowed down to reduce the gap. Students who were more experienced were left waiting around for students who were struggling a large part of the day.

Loved:

I loved that my son was inspired to create after viewing different cities.

Improvements:

I did not like the links to online gaming. There are a lot of parents who still do not let their children play online games at this age. My son had access to other games not recommended by the instructor as well with the links.
