Class Experience

Love pinball or just love to make things and find out how they work? In this week-long camp, you’ll make your own pinball machine!

Led by our Camp Director (who just happens to be a pinball expert), you’ll start by brainstorming a theme and designing your game. Then, you’ll jump into action by building the cardboard machine, figuring out the mechanics of how it works, customizing its appearance to reflect your game design, and adding some electronic elements like lights, bells and scoreboards!

By the end of the week, you’ll have a working pinball machine that you can keep playing and share with your friends.

Campers will:
Learn about game design
Learn about simple machines
Learn how to turn an idea into a playable game
Learn about the history of pinball machines
Learn how pinball machines work
Practice the engineering skills necessary to build their machine
Learn how engineering, design, art, and game design skills can be used together
Learn basic circuitry and coding

Required materials:

Registrants are required to purchase a pinball kit at registration ($100) to be delivered to camper's home.

Basic art supplies like scissors, colored paper, markers, glue (for cardboard), crayons, pencils, notepad, and paint
A computer or tablet with a reliable internet connection in order to connect to camp each day

Siblings who are registered will receive an automatic 10% discount.

I loved that we had a lot of time to work on the pinball machine and there was no restriction to what you could do to your pinball machine.

It would be nice if they taught me more about what everything in a pinball machine does.

Structured activities and the videos.

I feel the instructor did not have a great handle on motivating or redirecting boys in this age group. There was more independent work time and less structured tasks. Also it seemed that the skill level should have been narrowed down to reduce the gap. Students who were more experienced were left waiting around for students who were struggling a large part of the day.

I loved that my son was inspired to create after viewing different cities.

I did not like the links to online gaming. There are a lot of parents who still do not let their children play online games at this age. My son had access to other games not recommended by the instructor as well with the links.
