Class Experience

Love the look of 2D pixel art? Like playing old-school video games? Want to design and create your own 2D characters and worlds? This is the camp for you!

Spend a week designing 2D characters and worlds that you can use in video games or anywhere else! We’ll kick things off by looking back at old school games and games that are deliberately retro to figure out what makes them cool.

Then we’ll start putting pixels in place to design our own 2D characters, worlds, and games. We’ll use Piskel, a free online editor for sprites and pixel art, in connection with Unity, an industry-standard game design platform.

As you work, you’ll be able to share your games with other campers, try out the ones they’re creating, and give and receive feedback. You’ll also be able to share your games with friends and family.

Campers will:
Learn the basics of game design
Learn about careers in gaming
Learn what makes a game good and fun
Learn how to collaborate on building a game
Learn how to use Unity 3D to create a game of your own
Improve or gain coding skills
Learn to create 2D pixel art
Learn how to share games online

Loved:

Structured activities and the videos.

Improvements:

I feel the instructor did not have a great handle on motivating or redirecting boys in this age group. There was more independent work time and less structured tasks. Also it seemed that the skill level should have been narrowed down to reduce the gap. Students who were more experienced were left waiting around for students who were struggling a large part of the day.

Loved:

I loved that my son was inspired to create after viewing different cities.

Improvements:

I did not like the links to online gaming. There are a lot of parents who still do not let their children play online games at this age. My son had access to other games not recommended by the instructor as well with the links.
