Class Experience

Love creating characters and imagining the worlds they inhabit? In this camp, you can bring your characters and their environments to life.

We’ll start by talking about some of our favorite characters and what makes us love, admire, or identify with them. We’ll also talk about the worlds they inhabit and how those worlds help us understand the characters better.

Then, we’ll get to work designing our own characters and worlds. We’ll collaborate with one another on Figma, while also working in Blender, free and open-source 3D computer graphics software toolset used for creating animated films, visual effects, and more.

We’ll imagine what it’s like to live the lives of the character we create, we’ll storyboard their adventures, and learn how to make 2D and 3D characters. We’ll also share our work with one another, give and receive feedback, and discuss ways that we can keep using our work once camp is over.

Campers will:
Give and receive feedback while sharing their work with one another
Learn how to design and create characters and worlds
Learn how setting impacts a story and a character
Create characters using a professional software
Learn how to create 2D and 3D characters
Learn how to create an engaging story for their character and how to storyboard
Give and receive feedback while sharing their work with one another

Tech Needs:
Laptop or Desktop (PC, Mac, or Linux). Chromebooks and tablets will not work for this camp

Loved:

Structured activities and the videos.

Improvements:

I feel the instructor did not have a great handle on motivating or redirecting boys in this age group. There was more independent work time and less structured tasks. Also it seemed that the skill level should have been narrowed down to reduce the gap. Students who were more experienced were left waiting around for students who were struggling a large part of the day.

Loved:

I loved that my son was inspired to create after viewing different cities.

Improvements:

I did not like the links to online gaming. There are a lot of parents who still do not let their children play online games at this age. My son had access to other games not recommended by the instructor as well with the links.
