Class Experience

This course offers fully hands-on science activities. These projects for young scientists who like to conduct scientific experiments. If you find “Science is interesting”, then you are in the right place. During this course, students will build an understanding of scientific methods: Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data Collection, Analysis, Conclusion.

May Activities and Materials List
May 5th: Art Science with Skittles
4 white plate
1 Pack of Skittles
1 cup water
1 cup vinegar
1 cup milk

May 12th: Green House Effect
5 Jars
1 cup Vinegar – White, standard vinegar is best.
Baking Soda – Don’t use Baking Powder!
Measuring cups and spoons
Plastic Wrap – Also known as clingfilm.
Elastic bands – Large enough to fit over the mouth of the jar to secure the plastic wrap.
Heat Source – You can use a sunny window sill if you live somewhere with lots of hot direct sunlight, or use a heat lamp, space heater, or in our case we used a heat vent/radiator. It just needs to provide lots of heat evenly between the jars.
Thermometer – if possible non-contact infrared thermometer but you can also use standard dual scale thermometers. If you use standard thermometers you will need one for each jar
Masking Tape and Sharpie – For labeling the jars

May 19: Sweet Slurpee Experiment

Small plastic cup
Large bowl
Spoon or stir stick
Slurpee straws
Ice (lots!)
Salt – coarse rock salt works best
Juice – We used Guava Juice as a special treat and it was DELICIOUS!
Non-contact digital infrared thermometer or standard thermometer

May 26: Oil vs Water

Baby oil (other liquid oils work too, but baby oil is clear
Water
Cup, glass bowl, or petri dish.
Small cups (3)
Food coloring (minimum 2 colors, start with primary colors)
Dropper (like a medicine dropper, pipette, or even a syringe)
Spoons
