Class Experience

Overview
Break into the mainframe of the world of Artificial Intelligence! Over the course of the week, we will decrypt the meaning of what AI is, how it functions, and how artificial intelligence is used in our daily lives. We will also discover how artificial intelligence and automation is changing the future through the eyes of a spy!

AI Spy Camp is an introductory course in machine learning and computer science for students aged 8-14. The course is split into two halves: A machine learning & artificial intelligence coding class, followed by a hands-on Microbit design lab.

Spy AI Machine Learning Classroom:
As secret agents, we’ll take a closer look at machine learning techniques, which we’ll use to create amazing algorithmic functions and tools that any spy would need in the field. In addition, students will have the opportunity to create their very own AI companion!

Coder/Decoder Microbit Techbox Hands-on Design Lab:
This program will cover coding basics, then apply them to mechanical engineering principles and concepts in order to create physical devices such as musical instruments and stopwatches that we will build in the afternoon session.

Students in this class will apply the things they’ve learned in lecture to code real, working programs. They will then be applying these working programs to the Microbit to create fully functional mechanical devices. Our goal is to empower students and to help them feel accomplished, so students will have plenty of room to innovate when creating their programs.

Class Structure:
Class will be held remotely on Zoom. Our teachers will send out the Zoom link a few days before class.

10 - 12 AM: First Half: SPY AI/Machine Learning Classroom (No materials necessary)

1 hour lunch break from 12-1 PM: The teacher will be online for the duration if students need any help troubleshooting.

1 -3 PM: Second Half: Coder/Decoder Microbit TechBox Hands-on Design Lab (TechBox Required)

Alternate Time Zone Available:
This class will be held in Pacific Standard Time. However, we understand that not all students will be available at these times. If students wish to take this course from a different timezone, check out our Machine AI Camp Timeslots.

The structure for Machine AI is the same as this class structure. However, Machine AI will be held in Eastern Standard Time instead of Pacific Standard Time.
The AM class will still be the Machine Learning class, while the Afternoon class will be the hands-on Techbox Microbit class. You can sign up for the Machine AI class at any time, since no materials are required. However, signups for the Techbox class will close 4 days before the start of class, since students will need to have the Techbox in order to participate.

TechBox :
What You Will Receive in your Top Secret box;

Micro-controller (BBC Microbit)
Required Wiring
Microbit-compatible Servo
Microbit-compatible Speaker

When you sign-up, you will receive a box of materials and tools for the week's activities. Please allow for 5-7 business days for boxes to be received.

Note: Sign-ups for classes requiring the techbox will close 4 days prior to the start of class in order to allow students to receive the techbox. The Machine AI class is hands-off, so you can register for Machine AI class at any time.

Notes

Note: Camp registration closes a week in advance**

Loved:

The instructor was really fun, nice, and easy to talk to during the camp. Instructions were easy to follow. My daughter thought that the final project was really cool.

Improvements:

Sewing project was a little difficult sewing by hand because it was hard to push the needle through the "leather". But after camp we finished with a sewing machine.

Loved:

The instructor is very engaging (i.e., tells age appropriate jokes, really relates well with our child by asking about her interests) and patient. The materials are unique and my child looks forward to each activity with excitement.

Improvements:

The only thing that comes to mind is making sure that there are enough activities to fill the entire two hour time slot. Otherwise, no improvements needed.

Improvements:

the teacher provided no instruction at all. my 6-year old had to do everything on his own while the teacher remained completely silent. Then she abruptly said she had to end the class ten minutes early and ended the zoom call.
