5 - 18+ yrs
Fri, Aug 13, 2021 - Aug 27, 2021
11:00am - 11:45am EDT
In this private dance class (open to ages: 5 years and up), the student and I will work on ballet vocabulary based on their individual level. We will go through barre and center exercises as well as provide personal mentorship based on their needs.
We will focus on anything the learner may feel like they need extra support with. Some examples could be: focusing on turns, stretching, strengthening specific muscle groups or working on a choreographed solo. I could also provide advice and mentorship about following a professional dance career, preparing for auditions or applying to college BFA programs. Prior to scheduling the class the parent/learner should message me with some information about the level and prior experience the student has, as well as goals, they are hoping to accomplish during this class. I will then make sure I plan the class accordingly and completely customized to the student's needs.
Each class will be starting with a warm up using the barre, going through complex exercises that will challenge the learner's understanding of the ballet structure and provide attention to detail. We will then move through center exercises and possibly work on a choreographed solo (if requested).
This class is open to all ages and levels and each private will be customized and adjusted accordingly. This class is open to ALL and ANY bodies interested in investigating ballet physicality. The sections are scheduled upon request so make sure you reach out and we will plan and find the best fit for your learner based on their prior experience.
Just a few logistics before we get started:
It is nice to join the zoom meeting a few minutes early (if possible, otherwise no worries) so that I can help you with your setup. Just make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes (if you have ballet attire, that's great, but if not that is totally fine). You can complete this class with ballet shoes (if accessible), non-slippery shocks or barefoot. We can also work on pointe work during this class but only after meeting the learner and ensuring that they are strong and experienced enough to be en pointe. Find a room with some space to move (you may have to move some furniture around and make sure there is no cords or things you might trip over) and place your device on the floor so I can see your full body as you are moving. You will need a ballet barre (if you don't have a barre you can use a wall/ chair/ any piece of furniture around waist-height, accessible in your home). You can also have a water bottle close to you, if needed. Other than that you are all set and ready to get moving!
How To Participate
Attend class via Zoom video
This class will be hosted on Zoom video conferencing platform. You will receive an email 30 minutes before class starts with a link to the class and access instructions. We recommend you make sure your device is up to date and meets all system requirements before class.

About Lydia Perakis
As an educator, cultivating students’ awareness in order to connect the engine of the body with the mind and understand how that entity functions as part of a community, is one of my primary areas of focus. In addition, establishing a collective mind in the virtual space, searching for diverse perspectives and nurturing empathy via applied education are also very important. Lastly, engaging with the students in a disciplinary but non-authoritarian way, making space for artistic freedom and initiative development without losing structure and practicing of technical skills.
