Class Experience

Eureka! Archimedes discovered the nature of displacement and buoyancy while taking a bath. He was so excited that he jumped out and ran down the street yelling, "Eureka!" In this class, we will be investigating buoyancy force and water displacement to explore why some objects sink and some things float using foil boats. Students will have the opportunity to test different shapes of boats to see which design will hold the most weight (coins).

Notes

Class Outcome

Students will learn about Archimedes Principle and how water displacement and buoyance determine which objects sink or float. Archimedes Principle describes how large, heavy objects like metal boats loaded with cargo can stay afloat. Students will have a blast experimenting with different aluminum boat designs and affect the boat's ability to hold weight using different amounts of coins.

Supplies List
- Aluminum Foil (about 1 foot in length)
- 1 Large Bowl Filled with Water
- Coins (about 8 quarters, or 20-50 pennies, or many coins of varying sizes) *Students will use coins to see how much weight their boats can hold.*

- Optional - Random small, submergible objects such as Legos, bouncy balls, pieces of popcorn, plastic bottle caps, or other items your student is interested in testing.
