Class Experience

AAPI: The Art of Healing will provide a safe and supportive environment for young adults of Asian American and Pacific Islander descent, ages 18 – 35 to learn and process racial trauma, along with the physiological responses that occur when experiencing triggers or racially charged events. They will learn grounding techniques by engaging in mindfulness through art and play. Each session will also provide an outlet for participants to check-in and share their own experiences of racial trauma.

*mental health stigma
*self-care practices
*termination/closing

Therapist
Valerie Uy is a Chinese American Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and social justice advocate who is passionate about creating spaces of healing, connection and safety. Valerie strives to be aware of her own privileges and implicit biases by seeking out diversity trainings in anti-racism, spirituality, sex positivity, consensual non-monogamy, and LGBTQIA+ affirming practices. She inspires others through her authenticity and compassion to learn more about civic engagement and activism to support marginalized communities and has a vested interest in supporting the AAPI community through their experiences of racial trauma.

Valerie received her Masters for Marriage and Family Therapy at Alliant International University. She specializes in working with couples and individuals, specifically interracial couples, racial trauma, infidelity, and substance use. She works through an attachment-based and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) lens to help identify deep-rooted hurt and pain that impacts her clients’ interpersonal relationships.

When Valerie is investing time into her self-care, she enjoys HGTV, Disney, Broadway musicals, Filipino desserts, and snuggling or playing hide-and-seek with her Pet Partner certified pup named Jetson.
