Class Experience

Have you always wanted to learn how to draw, but never found the time? You’ve felt that creative spark, but no way to express it? You could try the myriad of tutorials online or take an impersonal online course or spend too much auditing a college class; or you could join us in the evening, once a week for ten weeks to learn the Fundamentals of Drawing while getting hands-on feedback from the instructor and your peers. This class will be held over synchronous Zoom meetings where the instructor will show you the basic techniques and terminology that we will then apply to create actual artwork. See you there!

Week 1: Introduction to Drawing Theory/Line
Learn: What makes a drawing, a drawing? Practice: Familiarizing yourself with your tools.

Week 2: Form
Learn: Basic Forms and contours / cross-contours.
Practice: Drawing shapes from observation.

Week 3: Light and Shadow
Learn: Light and the interaction of materiality.
Practice: Shading and texture.

Week 4: Perspective I
Learn: Linear perspective.
Practice: Drawing basic forms in perspective

Week 5: Perspective II
Learn: Curvilinear perspective.
Practice: Cityscape in 5-point perspective.

Week 6: Composition
Learn: Compositional elements. Practice: Drawing from reference, and applying compositional practices.

Week 7: Portraiture I
Learn: Forms of the Face.
Practice: Drawing the face from various angles.

Week 8: Portraiture II
Learn: Additional facial features. Practice: Individual consultation.

Week 9: Showcase I and Critique Guidelines
Learn: Critique etiquette.
Practice: No practice, display all completed work and critique.

Week 10: Showcase II and Cultivation of a Creative Practice.
Learn: What is a creative practice, and how to create one.

Materials List:
Required Materials (Kits will be made available)
➔ Set of Pencils (6H,4H,2H,HB,2B,4B,and6B)
➔ Erasers (White Pearl and Kneadable)
➔ Vine Charcoal
➔ Pad of Drawing Paper (16×24”)
➔ Blending Stumps
➔ Ruler (metal ones are best because the cork bottom doesn’t smudge as much)
➔ pencil sharpener

Optional Recommended Materials
➔ Eraser Pen (I recommend Tombow or Pentel)
➔ Conté (similar to charcoal, but a little waxier and it comes in a variety of earthy tones, great for portraits)
➔ Sandpaper (art supply stores often sell low grit sandpaper on a wood handle for cleaning blending stumps)

Loved:

Our kiddo came home gushing about the art she made.

Improvements:

Nothing. I asked them to provide more clear instruction after the last class and they did. It was perfect.

Loved:

My child spent the whole day engaged in art with new materials and creative, dedicated staff. I think they especially enjoyed having a small group of kids to collaborate with and learn from.

Improvements:

It was difficult to find the entrance to Vibe and drop off felt a little chaotic. I would have appreciated more dialogue with the teacher during drop off and the opportunity it’s to ask them questions because it was our first time.

Its SUPER fun and I like that they included a bunch of pronouns. The instructors were super fun, nice, and nerdy. In a good way.
