Class Experience

In our Little Coders course, students learn the basics of programming logic through hands-on activities and MIT’s introductory programming language called ScratchJr. Each thematic lesson will take your child on an adventure in which their imagination comes to life through interactive stories and games. Students will snap together graphical blocks to design, edit, and modify characters. During this process students will solve problems and develop foundational math and literacy skills.

All classes must be attended with a parent, who will both support the learning process and learn to code ScratchJr. as well.

Robofun recommends using two separate devices for this class, one for the Scratch Jr. coding app and one for Zoom

ScratchJr. was developed by Dr. Mitchel Resnick an associate at MIT. Dr. Resnick is one of Robofun’s Advisory Board members and trusted advisors.

Regardless of which class they take, or how many times they have taken it, our students do not repeat previous projects - they are always challenged and when they are ready they work on a new and interesting assignment.

Notes

Please follow the welcome email instructions for setting up Scratch Jr and come to each class with your tablet set to Scratch Jr. ready to go.

Loved:

It started on time. Activity was okay, just more beginner than anticipated.

Improvements:

1:1 lesson with monotone, unsmiling, autopilot instructor was unbearable Need people who have fun teaching 6/7s Fun-free and impassive, we quit after 45 minutes, I made up an excuse and said my nephew wasn’t feeling well All black background for a 10:30 with a 7y/o comes off intimidating Have parents pre-register for Scratch rather than during class Terms like X and Y coordinates are foreign to 6/7s Breaks every 20mins are ideal for this age group.

Jordan is a great instructor. He is knowledgeable and patient, and is guiding my son through Minecraft Creative mode while teaching him about electricity and circuitry. My son loves the class so much that we are taking it again in two weeks!

About Robofun

RoboFun offers dynamic workshops for children using cutting edge technologies. Children ages 3 – 12 (Pre-K to 6th grade) come to our studio on 102nd Street and Broadway in Manhattan to build and program robots, design and construct video games and make stop-motion animations. Your child will learn about engineering, coding, and creative thinking. Our work is based on children’s innate passion and curiosity and our workshops allow children to become makers and designers. We run creative after-school programs and train teachers in over 100 schools in the New York City area.
