Class Experience

Award-winning STEAM  programs are for K-6 grade students. Students will learn the engineering design process and do age-appropriate, innovative, hands-on activities, and integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.  STEAM Activities will expose students to the creative process, offer collaboration, increase critical thinking, and provide a unique way to problem solve. Participants will be challenged to question, explore, plan, discover, and analyze.  


Students will do the following activities: 

1st Week: Build A Functioning Heart 

2nd Week: Thermometer 

3rd Week: Pinhole Camera 

4th Week: The Water Clock  


The materials list will be sent as soon as you register.


How To Participate

Attend class via Zoom video

This class will be hosted on Zoom video conferencing platform. You will receive an email 30 minutes before class starts with a link to the class and access instructions. We recommend you make sure your device is up to date and meets all system requirements before class.


What To Bring

Projects students will do in STEM Classes:

 1st Week: Build A Functioning Heart

  • 3 x Pop bottles (710 mL) with caps, labels removed.
  • 4 x Bendy straws
  • 3 cups of water
  • Food coloring
  • Tape
  • Modeling clay or play dough
  • Sharp pokey for making holes in the caps)


2nd Week: Thermometer

  • Clear plastic drinking straw, preferably a 0.2-inch diameter straw.
  • Clean narrow-necked, water bottle with lid.
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • A few drops of red, blue, or green food coloring. Liquid food coloring works best.
  • Modeling clay or playdough
  • Water
  • Small bowl
  • Ice cubes
  • Warm water


3rd Week: Pinhole Camera

  • Cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels
  • Cardboard tube from a roll of aluminum foil or plastic wrap (smaller diameter than the tube from the paper towels)
  • a 2"x 2" piece of aluminum foil
  • ScotchTM magic tape (the type that is semi-transparent, not the clear, glossy kind)
  • a rubber band
  • a small pin, needle, or thumbtack

4th Week: The Water Clock

  • Styrofoam or Plastic Cup
  • Small Bell
  • Small Plastic Lid – a pop bottle cap or milk jug cap works great
  • String or yarn
  • Toothpick or similar for poking a hole
  • Bead (optional)
  • Glass Jar
  • Popsicle Stick

“It was very interesting to learn about how a thermometer works and make our own one with alcohol. I will show how it works to my classmates and friends.”

Improvements:

Provide material list as soon as register and including it in the note along the acess Instruction on the sync calendar.

Informative and sharing fun, great project for learning and understanding

Improvements:

Did not receive material list via email prior to the class date nor after registration. Did not receive weekly spots refill per membership. (Need manually to follow up with the provider and Sawyer continually.......and Sawyer takes too long still revolving the issue)

About Colorado S.T.E.A.M. Academy

Award-Winning STEAM Academy Learning Center was founded in 2015 with the mission to create a unique environment where every student is engaged, challenged, and empowered to do their very best.

To realize its mission, Steam Academy offers academic & enrichment courses throughout the year in private and small groups.
