Class Experience

Learn how to program in Scratch, online coding platform developed by MIT. No typing skills necessary.
Our Scratch curriculum is designed to motivate through example rather than through drills. Kids will gain the confidence to explore the vast Scratch platform on their own by the end of the semester.

We have a flexible makeup policy so if you miss or know  you'll miss a class, you can do a makeup at any of the other Beginner Scratch (or same level) class offered that week.

Typically we reserve our last class for students to take a pre-existing project (or create something completely on their own) and add their own customization to it and they spend 5 minutes at the end of the semester taking turns doing a show & tell presentation to each other and to their parents.

Age ranges are approximate. If you are unsure which class would be best for your child, please feel free to reach out to us at info@penguincodingschool.com and we would be happy to help.

My 6 year old son is learning basic coding and game design concepts in an engaging and easy to understand format. The teacher (Rachel) is great with kids and good at keeping the kids on task and providing individualized help as needed when kids need it.

Loved:

My 6 year old is engaged for an hour. The small class size means that the teacher answers everyone’s questions and can engage one on one while other kids work. The games my 6 yr old creates are fun to play. I can work for a full hour without my kid needing me.

Loved:

My daughter's instructor, Sarah, is fantastic! She has so much patience for the kids and is eager to help students who want to program something a bit differently, who fall behind, or who just have general questions. She moves at a comfortable pace and always includes a stretch or brain break. At the end, she asks the kids what they learned. If there is time, she allows them to share their creations with the class.

Improvements:

Maybe give the kids a simple challenge to try and figure out in between classes to encourage them to interact with the software throughout the week and to make them think about what the different pieces of code actually do. The challenge could even be something they did in that day's activity. Even without this homework, the class has been great!

Loved:

This is the first STEAM/Computer activity we have enrolled in that Callie really, really seems to enjoy. Also, Kathleen is an excellent instructor, knowledgeable, patient and runs the classes well. Our daughter likes that she has a teacher who is a woman, so many of her tech related activities in the past (snap circuits First Lego, etc.) have been men so it has been nice for her to make a connection. This is an enrichment we would do again in the fall if offered.

Improvements:

Nothing, we have rally appreciated that our daughter has truly enjoyed the class.
