Class Experience

Did you know you’re more likely to forget something when it's written in black and white? Psychologists have discovered numerous links between memory and color. For instance, if you use a red pen to write a phone number down, rather than a black one, your chances of remembering it are much higher. This class aims to uncover the reason why.

First, we’ll unpack the basis of memories and how they’re formed. Then, we’ll explore the impact different colors can have on these memories. Lastly, we’ll test the theory amongst ourselves. With two teams, we’ll see who can remember the most words from a list and details from a picture. The picture and list will be the same for both teams; however, the colors will not be. Who’s going to win? Let’s see!

What you'll learn

Students will understand simple memory processes. They’ll identify the neural mechanism and be able to explain why color might have some effect on this. Not only will students learn critical reasoning skills, but they’ll also explore a potentially helpful study skill. Using captivating colors when memorizing new facts has been shown to be much more effective than black and white.

Loved:

The length of the class and the activity which is right up most kids' alley. My student said "I didn't know that you can jump three times higher on Mars than Earth." One can't beat that kind of excitement.

Improvements:

How to let children know not to continually pop up with comments. One child in particular hogged most of the discussion. Don't know how to deal with that. Have kids on mute?

Loved:

Ms. Amber is the greatest teacher possible! She is exciting, engaging, and seems to show a general love for teaching children! The material is excellent, and our child is not the only one who has learned a few things during the classes! These classes are one of the best opportunities out there!

Improvements:

Add more class options taught by Ms. Amber, especially in the evening/following school hours, as well as adding more openings for free classes/maybe give past students a head-start for access to the free classes?
