Class Experience

Did you know that humans can detect at least one trillion different scents? Our senses are incredible, especially our sense of smell. When we smell something, we rely on the olfactory nerve to analyze tiny chemicals which float around in the air and travel through the nose. The olfactory nerve sends signals throughout our brain which in turn allow us to discern one scent from another. However, it’s not the only important nerve! The trigeminal nerve is also important when smelling something; it’s responsible for that warm smell of cinnamon and cool smell of menthol. How great!

During their research, scientists have designated vanilla as one of the most pleasurable scents. Do you agree? Why or why not? We’ll discuss pleasant & unpleasant smells and why our brain notices them as such.

At the end of our lesson, we’ll have a mini scavenger hunt to discover and categorize everyday smells found around the house!

What you'll learn

Exploring Human Anatomy One Sense at a Time

Students will focus on anatomy and physiology in this lesson. They’ll explore the way in which we smell and send signals through our brains about these smells. We will learn on how smell works within our body system. In doing so, students will learn critical thinking skills and various experimental skills (i.e. making observations) through practical activities. We’ll discuss the theoretical concept of smell as well as practical functions of the body.

The length of the class and the activity which is right up most kids' alley. My student said "I didn't know that you can jump three times higher on Mars than Earth." One can't beat that kind of excitement.

How to let children know not to continually pop up with comments. One child in particular hogged most of the discussion. Don't know how to deal with that. Have kids on mute?

Ms. Amber is the greatest teacher possible! She is exciting, engaging, and seems to show a general love for teaching children! The material is excellent, and our child is not the only one who has learned a few things during the classes! These classes are one of the best opportunities out there!

Add more class options taught by Ms. Amber, especially in the evening/following school hours, as well as adding more openings for free classes/maybe give past students a head-start for access to the free classes?
