Class Experience

Wondering how you’re going to help your elementary schooler continue to solidify their Spanish literacy skills, when so much of his/her academic career is dedicated to English? Well, allow us to present to you our Level 2 Foundational Spanish Literacy Class!

In Level 1, we used music, games, exciting visuals, and hands-on materials to instruct students in the foundational principles of Spanish literacy (vowels, consonants, syllables, simple words.) We also highlighted similarities and differences between English and Spanish writing systems, as understanding the inner workings of their two languages side by side is an invaluable skill for bilingual students.

In this follow-up class we will pick up where Level 1 left off* and will cover more complex syllables (like consonant blends and diphthongs), words, and phrases. We will also dive deeper into some spelling rules like why don’t you ever see ‘z’ and ‘i’ together? Finally, we’ll encourage our students to pursue reading goals and have each of them share a little bit about the books they’re currently reading and enjoying.

*We left off last session (Level 1) having covered the following letters: A E I O U M P S T N L D B V C F Y H G and Z and the following skills: uppercase/lowercase identification, counting syllables, stretching and blending sounds, reading aloud + pausing, and were just beginning rhymes!

[Recording option is available for this class!]

(To participate in this class, students should be at high intermediate through advanced fluency, but still fairly new to reading/writing in Spanish. This class is complete Spanish immersion, the instructor will use Spanish as the language of instruction, except for occasionally highlighting similarities/differences between English and Spanish writing systems. Students do not have to have taken Level 1 with us, but see description for what familiarity they should have coming in.)

Loved:

The rosca was delicious Seeing the other kids motivated my child to engage.

Improvements:

I rarely say this, but nothing. Within the current circumstances that Miss Kayla teaches she does an amazing job. Ok one thing, maybe have a visual queue to reel kids back to attention.

About Bilingüitos Spanish Immersion

Bilingüitos exists to cultivate and celebrate bilingualism all around us. We are locally run Spanish immersion programs based out of Loudoun County, Virginia. As of summer 2020 we are also happy to be offering online programs. We offer language classes and programs for children of all ages — Mommy & Me, Preschool, Afterschool, you name it. We also have classes for adult learners because we believe in bilingualism for all! In addition to teaching language through classroom games, activities, and lessons, we also believe in enrichment programs (think interdisciplinary skills anywhere from science experiments to art projects to cooking classes to yoga) because we want our students to be able to use their bilingualism across all domains. Both at our facility and through off-site private/charter classes, we are committed to our local community. For all those in the pursuit of bilingualism, we extend the opportunity to learners of all linguistic backgrounds — native speakers, heritage language students, and second language learners alike. Our mission in the classroom is to create a positive multicultural learning environment where our students explore and discover freely, immerse themselves in a new language and culture, and gain the self-confidence they need as they grow into future bilingual leaders. Beyond the classroom, we are a vibrant and diverse community of families who are passionate about bilingualism and dedicated to instilling a lifelong love for learning in their children. We delight in bringing our local bilingual community together through playdates, storytimes, seasonal parties, movie nights, and other events all around Loudoun. Finally, through our online resources like our blog and podcast, we aim to equip parents with the knowledge and tools they need in order to forge the path to bilingualism for their children. We believe that adding and maintaining a second language is not always easy, but that it is always, A L W A Y S worth it!
