Class Experience

AURAL SKILLS FOR SINGERSGrade: 9th - 12th (or Company Members)

Aural Skills for Singers has been fully revamped by theory teacher Patrick McGill for its second year only offered at Crystal Theatre. Seen as the natural next step from Advanced Music Theory for Singers this class focuses only on practically applicable aural skills such as Solfeggio, Ear Training, Sight Reading, Dictation, Play and Sing assignments, Conducting, Hearing Harmonic Changes, and Rhythm Drills. Each class will begin with a sight reading section, where students will be given a melody to sight read and sing, then sing again while conducting in the correct pattern. Each sight reading selection will be sung in both Fixed and Moveable “do” modeled by teacher Patrick McGill from his time teaching theory at Yale University and matching the expectations of the countrys’ leading music conservatories/universities. Moving forward as a group we will drill complex rhythms taken from multiple text books and sourced from the most famous Broadway composers such as Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Gershwin, Porter, and more. Following this students will have a listening section focused on teaching singers how to use their ears to analyze music and draw conclusions. We continue with play and sing assignments which will help students build foundational piano skills while also strengthening their ability to read multiple musical clefs at the same time. We will finish each class with a dictation that includes melody, bass line, and a quick harmonic analysis reinforcing the subjects learned in Advanced Music Theory for Singers.

Meets: 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31 — 5:00-6:30pm

Loved:

I have never seen my girls so excited. They really enjoyed going to Crystal theater.

Improvements:

Due to me being a busy mom and having three children I wish the teachers would tell the kids to tell their parents to check emails would help the parents be on track with what is going on. Or maybe give the kids a slip as a reminder. I guess the communication.

Loved:

The class got kids interacting and building confidence. Christina was kind and welcome to suggestions. This was our first experience with Crystal Theatre and we loved it! A small, but much appreciated thing was that they brought the students outside at the end of each class so parents didn't have to get out of the car with other little ones.

Improvements:

Please make sure all content is age-appropriate.
