Local natural dyer Amanda de Beaufort will introduce participants to the age old process of botanical dyeing—the process of using plants to create sustainable, toxin-free dye.
Did you know that items you routinely throw out can be used to transform fabric and yarn into a natural spectrum of color? This workshop will focus on exploring the dye potential of avocado (pink/purple) and onion (yellow/green/rust/brown). Amanda will demonstrate ways to work with modifiers (to shift color), mordants (to fix color on fabric) and simple pattern making on fabric.
Each participant will leave with a tea towel of their own creation. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own medium to small sized natural fiber (cotton, wool, silk, linen, etc.) garment or item to dye. Any synthetic content will not be suitable for dyeing. All materials including test fabric and tea towel are included in the price of the workshop.
