Class Experience

The Ohana Arts Summer Musical Theatre Academy is an intensive program that is geared for students who have a love for musical theatre and are serious about developing their skills as young artists.  During the first three weeks, students will take intensive acting, dance, and music classes (grouped by grade level), and taught by visiting and local professional teaching artists, as well as visiting professors from the country's top musical theater colleges and universities.  The curriculum will include scene study, acting through song, musical theatre dance techniques, monologues, repertoire & song choice and more. Students completing grades 10-12 will also have the opportunity to participate in the 1-week "Pre-College Workshop".

Past Academy faculty have included professors from Boston Conservatory, University of Michigan, UCLA, Emerson College, NYU, and Walnut Hill School of the Arts.  Please check back at a later date for the 2023 faculty list.

The first three weeks of classes will culminate in a Summer Musical Showcase performance on Saturday, June 24th, 2023.  The showcase features various solo and group dances, original works, and collaborative musical numbers from a wide variety of musical genres.

From June 26th through July 23rd, students will rehearse daily for a fully staged musical theatre production, which will be professionally staged either in the 600-seat Kennedy Theatre or 150-seat Ernst Lab Theatre on the University of Hawaii Campus the weekend July 20th-23rd, 2023.  This year the tentative productions for the Summer Musical Theatre Academy program are "MEAN GIRLS" and "THE PROM"! (Please note that in order to provide the best experience possible, Ohana Arts reserves the right to change the productions if needed).

In addition to music, dance, and acting technique classes, participation in the Summer Musical Showcase and Musical Theatre Production, students in the Musical Theatre Academy Program will also partake in:
