Richmond Art Center is the largest visual arts center in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, delivering exciting arts experiences to people of all ages who reflect the diverse richness of our community. We do this through onsite Studio classes and Exhibitions, and offsite Art in the Community programs. The Richmond Art Center originated in 1936, when local artist Hazel Salmi, who worked for the WPA, traversed the streets of Richmond with a suitcase packed with art supplies, eager to teach art to anyone interested. Today, everything we do at the Center continues to breathe life into Salmi’s original vision: That within every person lives an artist.

Loved:

It felt like we learned all the steps to make something cool on our own. I'm super excited about it. I was impressed with how much she was able to get in.

Improvements:

I think there was a handout that was sent out through the Sawyer system that I didn't get initially I think because I must have signed up after the message went out. The teacher was able to send it over after the class though.

Loved:

I enjoyed meeting in person. The instructor provided basis information about water colors that covered a range of topics. Particularly helpful were the resources provided on-line after each class.

Improvements:

I think the class could have been more creative in terms of what we worked on and a syllabus or an outline of what each class would be about would have been helpful.

Loved:

Julia was clear and patient. She described what she was doing very well. I had done some embroidery decades ago. Her techniques are more creative and practical than what I learned back then.

Improvements:

The movement of the embroidered fabric made me dizzy. But I encourage you to continue offering a course like this online for several reasons. We don't want to be using our cars, we want to connect with other people even if it is just virtually, people doing embroidery tend to do indoor projects so it is a perfect activity for this time of year, and more.

Loved:

Having only 6 students meant everyone got some personal attention and there were no traffic jams at the press. Jason encouraged creativity and experimentation, and talked about techniques and subtleties that only an experienced print-maker would know.

Improvements:

Maybe a bit more structure. Jason seemed a little scattered at times, but this is a minor complaint. I think those with prior art experience and already familiar with relief print-making did the best. This probably happens in most art classes.
