Dobbs Ferry School Age Summer Camp

Description

Scribbler Summer Camp in our Dobbs Ferry studio includes daily walks on the Aqueduct trail, collaborative outdoor earthworks, open play, lunch at the local playground, and of course, tons of art-making in the studio! Each week we’ll make artwork connected to a specific theme or medium (see list below). Every Friday, we'll host an opening of a special exhibition of our artwork. A healthy snack is provided. You send a bagged lunch. We are nut-free.

7/6-7/10 FACETIME: Large-Scale Self-Portraits + Family Portrait Sculptures
We’ll start the week by creating large-scale self-portrait paintings focused on including all the details that make each of us unique. Then, we’ll move on to building 3-dimensional family portraits using painting, collage, and sculpture materials. These will be sure to impress: mixed-media pieces that celebrate the distinguishing features of each family member!

7/13-7/17 JUST EAT IT: Large-Scale Food Paintings + Delicious Dish Sculptures
Food has long been a muse for visual artists and it’s certainly a topic of inspiration for our youngest art-makers! We’ll start the week by picking our favorite foods and completing large-scale paintings as odes to them. Then, we’ll make a complete dish (including the dish, placemat & silverware itself!) out of sculptural materials! We’ll invite parents to come to our Incre(edible) Cafe at the end of the week to see our creations.

7/20-7/24 HOME SWEET HOME: Dollhouse Design
Create your own dollhouse, Scribble-style! During this week of camp, we'll paint our own wallpaper, lay unique wood and tile flooring, and build fun and functional furniture out of wood...even make our own miniature art to decorate the walls! At the end of the semester, artists will take home a fully decorated and ready-to-play dollhouse.

7/27-7/31 AMAZING ABSTRACTION: Paintings + Prints + Sculpture
Abstraction is not always easy. It’s a challenge to focus on non-representational images and highlight the simple (but most important!) elements of art: shape, line, and color. But at Scribble, this challenge is where so much creativity is fueled. This week at camp, we’ll make shape & line paintings, block print series, and a wooden sculpture.

8/3-8/7 ART SUPPLY SHOP: Paper-making + Paint & Paint Brush-making + Clay-making
Let’s play (art) store! We’ll spend this week of camp making and packaging our own art supplies including beautiful paper, our own paint from natural materials, our own paint brushes and play-dough. Parents will be invited to visit our finished store at the end of the week.

8/10-8/14 SCULPTURE: Small-Scale with Clay + Large-Scale with Papier-Mache
Most kids have an innate interest in building. Sculpture is one of the foundational classes at Scribble mainly because it directly teaches to our mission: art-making is about problem-solving and art making is about responding to the materials in front of you in the moment. For this week of summer camp, artists will explore all types of building with a variety of materials and methods, all to teach (through experience) the most basic elements of sculpture: structural stability and aesthetic detail/interest

8/17-8/21 PRINTMAKING: Block Prints + Monoprints + Linocuts
This week of summer camp will give artists experiences with both traditional and non-traditional printmaking methods including block printing with found objects, linoleum printing, mono-printing and more. We’ll print on many different surfaces including wood and various types of paper and then explore layering over our prints with painting, drawing, and collage

8/24-8/28 BACK TO (ART) SCHOOL, ALMOST: Make our own school supplies
What’s the best way to kick those end of summer blues? How about making your own Back-to-School supplies?! This week, we’ll be painting pencil cases, binding sketchbooks, making our own pencils and erasers, and of course, ending the week with our own painted backpacks to carry it all!
