Inwood Summer Camp for School Age Kids

4 - 9 yrs

Description

Offered in partnership with Bread and Yoga, summer camp in our Inwood studio includes open play, yoga, a daily walk in our beloved Inwood parks and afternoons filled with themed intensive workshops! Healthy snack is provided, you send a bagged lunch.

7/6-7/10 URBAN NATURALIST
What would you do if you suddenly found yourself in the middle of the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on your back? Probably wonder how you got there! Then, you would get to work figuring out how to find water, food, shelter and a way to get home! We don’t have true wilderness in Inwood, but we have the next best thing — Inwood Hill Park! We’ll explore the forest each day as we make water out of thin air, forage for food, build shelter, and practice other survival skills! Join us in the adventure!

7/13-7/17 JUST EAT IT: Large-Scale Food Paintings + Delicious Dish Sculptures
Food has long been a muse for visual artists and it’s certainly a topic of inspiration for our youngest art-makers! We’ll start the week by picking our favorite foods and completing large-scale paintings as odes to them. Then, we’ll make a complete dish (including the dish, placemat & silverware itself!) out of sculptural materials! We’ll invite parents to come to our Incre(edible) Cafe at the end of the week to see our creations.

7/20-7/24 HOME SWEET HOME: Dollhouse Design
Create your own dollhouse, Scribble-style! During this week of camp, we'll paint our own wallpaper, lay unique wood and tile flooring, and build fun and functional furniture out of wood...even make our own miniature art to decorate the walls! At the end of the semester, artists will take home a fully decorated and ready-to-play dollhouse.

7/27-7/31 XYLOPHONE BAND
Strike your mallets on xylophone or metallophone and hear how your part weaves into a full ensemble. We’ll play a range of musical styles, from the lively marimba music of Zimbabwe to the shimmering Indonesian gamelan music of Java.

8/3-8/7 DELICIOUS STORIES
There are two things that are guaranteed hits with people everywhere: food and stories! In this workshop, we will pair best loved food-centric folk and fairy tales with creating fantastic fresh recipes in the kitchen. In each session we will explore one folktale through deep listening, dramatic play, and learning to tell the tales to others. Then, we will whip up culinary delights that reflect the story we just worked on. Think: Jack and the Beanstalk and Three Bean Salad or Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Oatmeal Parfaits.

8/10-8/14 ART SUPPLY SHOP: Paper-making + Paint & Paint Brush-making + Clay-making
Let’s play (art) store! We’ll spend this week of camp making and packaging our own art supplies including beautiful paper, our own paint from natural materials, our own paint brushes and play-dough. Parents will be invited to visit our finished store at the end of the week.

8/17-8/21 LET’S JOIN THE CIRCUS
We'll spend the week practicing various circus skills such as juggling with scarves, balls, and balloons. We'll balance feathers, spin plates, somersault, and more! By the end of the week everyone will have a cultivated a trick or two to surprise even themselves.

8/24-8/28 BACK TO (ART) SCHOOL, ALMOST: Make our own school supplies
What’s the best way to kick those end of summer blues? How about making your own Back-to-School supplies?! This week, we’ll be painting pencil cases, binding sketchbooks, making our own pencils and erasers, and of course, ending the week with our own painted backpacks to carry it all!
