Week 1 (July 8th-12th) Survival Skills — with Chris Whitney:
What would you do if you suddenly found yourself in the middle of the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on your back? Probably wonder how you got there! Then, you would get to work figuring out how to find water, food, shelter and a way to get home! We don’t have true wilderness in Inwood, but we have the next best thing —- Inwood Hill Park! We’ll explore the forest each day as we make water out of thin air, forage for food, build shelter, and practice other survival skills! Join us in the adventure!
FIELD TRIP: Coming Soon

Week 2 (July 15th-19th) Theatre/Storytelling:
There are two things that are guaranteed hits with people everywhere: food and stories! In this workshop, we will pair best loved food-centric folk and fairy tales with creating fantastic fresh recipes in the kitchen. In each session we will explore one folktale through deep listening, dramatic play, and learning to tell the tales to others. Then, we will whip up culinary delights that reflect the story we just worked on. Think: Jack and the Beanstalk and Three Bean Salad or Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Oatmeal Parfaits.
FIELD TRIP: The Horticultural Society of NY Educational Garden @Riverbank State Park

Week 3 (July 22rd-26th) Go big or go home:
If your artists dream big, then this week is for them! We’ll begin by creating GIANT mandala collagraph prints. Then we’ll work on drawing and painting HUGE maps of our community. Last, we’ll make an ENORMOUS abstract painting. See an underlying theme here? Bigger is better this week at Scribble camp!
FIELD TRIP: Museum of Art and Design

Week 4 (July 29th-August 2nd) Selfies:
Me, me, me...we’ll be embracing the egocentrism of childhood in this week of selfies at Scribble camp! We’ll start with a large-scale self-portrait paintings. Then, we’ll move on to building ourselves in 3-dimensional found object sculptures. We’ll end the week with our faces as the canvas: think face paint (all-natural), modeling and photography!
FIELD TRIP: The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Week 5 (August 5th-9th) Amazing Abstraction:
Abstraction is not always easy. It’s a challenge to focus on non-representational images and highlight the simple (but most important!) elements of art: shape, line and color. But at Scribble, this challenge is where so much creativity is fueled. We’ll be making shape & line paintings, creating a block print series, and building a wood sculpture.
FIELD TRIP: Guggenheim

Week 6 (August 12th-16th) The Great Artdoors:
This week at camp we’ll bring the outdoors in...into the studio, that is! Nature is such an important inspirational and practical part of art-making and this week, we’ll be exploring just how we can infuse the outdoors into our indoors. We’ll start the week with a natural found object print, then we’ll move on to building a found object sculpture. We’ll end our week, painting en plein air!
FIELD TRIP: The High Line

Week 7 (August 19th-23rd) Xylophone Band — with David Haiman:
Strike your mallets on xylophone or metallophone and hear how your part weaves into a full ensemble. We’ll play a range of musical styles, from the lively marimba music of Zimbabwe to the shimmering Indonesian gamelan music of Java.
FIELD TRIP: Indonesian Consulate
