Description
Have you ever wanted to make art from your everyday life but weren’t sure where to begin? This short workshop will give you the tools you need, no drawing experience needed. Like a personal essay but illustrated, the autobiographical comic has grown into its own celebrated art form. From roughly-drawn single panel observations to book-length works, there are basically no limits when it comes to expressing yourself in comic form. We will explore the diverse and expressive work of a wide variety of artists such as Lliana Fink, Julia Wertz, Lucy Knisley and Ally Brosh (Of Hyperbalist and a Half). Then we will have fun making our own comics in a relaxed and non-judgy atmosphere. I will be answering questions along the way and talking about how to get your start if publishing is something that interests you. Basic supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own if you have favorite drawing tools.
Jessica’s comics have been published by the New Yorker, the Washington Post, Buzzfeed and Spiralbound, where she has an illustrated advice column called Ask Olive. Her picture books include Shark Detective, Adrift: An Odd Couple of Polar Bears, Right Now and The Blobfish Book.
