Learn screenwriting from the Best! Jenna Reback writer from Marvel's Jessica Jones is giving a master class on screenwriting!
This 6-week course will give students a greater understanding of the building blocks of a screenplay—character, location and plot—through a combination of short lectures, watching and discussing scenes from films, and workshops. Students will take story ideas from inception to a 5-minute script. PLEASE NOTE: Part of the class is to teach how to use professional screenwriting software so students will be required to buy either Final Draft for $84, or Celtx is available for a monthly fee of $7.50 for a year.
WEEK 1 - THE BASICS MAY 1
What makes a short film “good?” How do character, location and plot influence each other? What’s it like to be a professional screenwriter—and hey, what software do you use to write a script? After watching two short films, students will brainstorm original character and overall story ideas.
WEEK 2 - THE FUNDAMENTALS OF A SCENE MAY 8
How much detail should a writer put on a page? How long should a scene be? What makes a scene interesting? After comparing the short films from last week with the scripts they came from, students will practice writing a short scene of their own.
WEEK 3 - THE STORY SPINE MAY 15
What are the four “beats” that every story on screen needs to follow? Using the two short films from Week 1 as templates, students will begin to design their own “story spines:” the core of the outline that will become their scripts.
WEEK 4 - THE OUTLINE MAY 22
Why do all screenwriters outline before starting to write a script, and what does an outline look like? Students will begin to develop and workshop their story spines into full-fledged script outlines.
WEEK 5 - FROM OUTLINE TO SCRIPT JUNE 5
Going from outline to script is more than cutting and pasting—how does a writer make a script come to life? Students will practice honing dialogue and action descriptions so they shine.
WEEK 6 - THE WRITERS’ ROOM JUNE 12
Students will participate in a professional-style writers’ room, where they offer constructive ideas and thoughts on each other’s work.
