AISHLING FOREST SCHOOL ESSENTIALS FALL-SPRING 2023 PROGRAM: Aishling Forest School is THRILLED to offer up the ninth season of Forest School dedicated to adventurous little(s) and their families.

Our Forest School is 100% nature-immersed and located in our beautiful home in the woods at CEED (Center for Environmental Education + Discovery) in Brookhaven, NY. Our mission is to create a quality forest school and enrichment program, where the magic of childhood runs free and nature is the greatest teacher to connect with yourself, each other, and Mama Earth.

This unique program will be 7 months long from Monday-Friday from 11:00-1:30 pm starting in September 2022. The program is best suited for children ages 3-9 years old (homeschoolers are welcome!) Learners participating will need to be potty proficient.

The program will be drop-off sessions from 11:00 am-1:30 pm and will begin on Monday, September 19th, 2022, and will end for the winter on Friday, December 16th, 2022. Our program will resume again on Monday, March 13th, 2023, and end for the summer on Friday, June 9th, 2023.

Our program includes:

• 7 months of 2.5 hour Forest School drop-off sessions (we break for the winter months of January and February)

• Access to our beautiful community events, like our annual Lantern Walk and May Day

Please note that waterproof rain suits and boots will need to be purchased prior to attending Forest School. Aishling Forest School has a discounted partnership with Oaki and is happy to pass our 25% off promo code to you upon registration. All gear will be need to pre-treated with Permethrin clothing treatment spray prior to the start of Forest School (more details on that upon registration).

THE DEVELOPMENT OF FOREST SCHOOL: “Let Nature be your teacher.” – William Wordsworth

Forest Schools are distinguished by their commitment to 100% outdoor time and complete nature immersion, unstructured flow learning, child-inspired emergent curriculum, place-based focus, inquiry-based teaching style and authentic play. Nature immersion is defined as “Unstructured free time in nature resulting in an intimate, deep and personal connection to the natural world.” This approach draws on, in addition to the Scandinavian outdoor model of friluftsliv (“free open-air life”), the learning theories and playful child-centered pedagogy of thinkers such as Rudolf Steiner and Maria Montessori, and on the nature-based education activities of Kurt Han and the British Scouting and Woodcraft Folk movements, among other influences.

THE AISHLING FOREST SCHOOL KEY PRINCIPLES: "Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children’s health (and also, by the way, in our own).” – Richard Louv

• Total nature immersion regardless of the weather or season. Nature immersion is defined as unstructured free time in nature resulting in an intimate, deep and personal connection to the natural world.

• Interest-led Flow Learning

• Reggio-inspired Emergent Curriculum

• Place-based Education

• Inquiry-based Teaching Style

• Positive Reinforcement, Conscious and Respectful Behavioral Approach

• Emphasis on Individual Empowerment and Group Bonding

• Respect and Empathy for Others, Self and the Living Earth

• Small Class Sizes

• Low Leader: Student Ratio

All sessions are designed and led by a Level 3 certified Forest School leader and qualified staff and volunteers. Each session is learner-led and learners are given the freedom and responsibility to explore their interests and therefore initiate and direct their own learning.

WHAT HAPPENS AT FOREST SCHOOL: “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in tune once more.” – John Burroughs

Forest School uses natural resources to stimulate imagination, creativity, and investigation. Activities can include:

 • Shelter building

• Natural art

• Using knots and lashings

• Rope swing and rope bridge navigation

• Fire lighting

• Animal tracking

• Bug hunts

• Tree investigations

• Climbing and balancing

• Woodwork using tools, e.g. making musical instruments, jewelry, and decorative items

Most activities can be curriculum-linked and span a number of subjects, including Math’s, English, Design & Technology, Science, Music, and Art.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF FOREST SCHOOL: “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” – Rachel Carson

Forest School is suited to all ages and abilities. The aim of Forest School is to develop the learner holistically and at their own pace. The benefits of this holistic, learner-led approach can be transferred to the classroom where children are found to be more motivated and able to concentrate more effectively.

Researched benefits of Forest School include:

• Are less likely to come down with common infections, since they spend little time inside, where viruses and bacteria thrive

• Have better motor skills, such as agility, balance, and coordination

• Increased ability to perceive and manage risk

• Engage in more imaginative and dynamic forms of play

• Are less likely to be overweight or obese
