“We are born makers. We move what we’re learning from our heads to our hearts through our hands.”- Brene Brown
Childhood is a time of magic, curiosity, and delight. At Aishling Forest School our mission is to allow the magic of childhood to run free and we know that nature is the greatest teacher to connect us to ourselves, each other and Mama Earth. When children make things with their hands, it ignites their curiosity, jump-starts their imaginations, and develops their skill and artistic acumen.
That’s why we’re thrilled to offer up our 4th season of the Artists in the Forest program, designed to inspire children to work with the elements of nature to create process-based art. Projects will vary from large-scale site-specific sculptures and paintings to smaller individual wild-crafted works using loose parts gathered from the forest such as stones, feathers, sticks, and leaves. Every week your little artist will be encouraged to connect to his or her creative abilities and develop an appreciation for Mother Earth through varying nature-based art projects.
This unique program will be 3 months long on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30pm starting in September 2022. The program is best suited for children ages 4-9 years old (homeschoolers are welcome!) Learners participating will need to be potty proficient. The program will be drop-off sessions from 4:00pm-5:30pm and will begin on Wednesday, September 21st, 2021, and will end for the winter on Wednesday, December 7th, 2021.
Our program includes:
• 3 months of Wednesday 1.5 hour drop-off sessions
• Access to our beautiful community events, like our annual Lantern Walk and May Day
Our resident artist and Forest School Leader, Melissa has always had a great interest in the art world, ever since a child her grandmother encouraged her to paint and draw nature. Upon graduating high school, she became the Assistant Program Director at Artist’s Woods in Amagansett leading nature based art classes amongst the beautiful trees at a private art school. In addition to creating her own paintings, jewelry, and sculpture, she has completed a three year certification to become an Expert Technician of Stone, Metal, and Ceramic Restoration from Palazzo Spinelli, l’Istituto per il restauro dell’arte in Florence, Italy. After many years of running a private art conservation practice, she stepped down to return to her roots to her passion of teaching children art in the forest and creating her own artwork and jewelry once again.
