Photography/ Video Course

Ages 6th - 8th grade

Description

About this course: This course is designed for students to engage with the craft of documenting and storytelling through still and moving images.

Classroom activities will include:

· Review of basic digital camera operations

· Digital portraiture and natural lighting techniques with cameras and smartphones

· Seeing your city with a camera

· Film photography and using a light meter

· The history of Street Photography and skills required to do it

· Videography methods for documenting family and friends

· How to properly transfer files from camera to computer to hard drive

· Various positions within the filmmaking process

· Viewing filmmaking and photography documentaries

· Guest speakers

Assignments will be given at the end of most of our 2 hour sessions.

These will included:

· Researching a photographer or filmmaker to share in class

· Taking portraits of family, friends, pets, or landscapes

· Using video to tell a story about family, friends, or the student’s neighborhood

· Preparing for an end of session, mixed-media, student art show that is open to the community

About Daniel Shapiro Daniel is a freelance photographer from Cleveland, Ohio now living in Brooklyn, New York. He has worked with Ultra Records, Lufthansa USA, DHL, Berkshire Hathaway, and City of NY. Daniel has been featured in Noisey, CFDA, Aftenposten, and Malibu Magazine.

Beyond showing his own toddler how to properly hold a camera, Daniel has experience as a substitute teacher at University Synagogue in Brentwood, California and as a teacher's assistant at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan.
