(for those who be grades 6-8 in the fall)
The power to understand and communication through story is the power to command a room and affect change.
Story-telling is a timeless method of communicating, from fireside gatherings of cavemen through ancient Greek mythology, to modern times, stories one formed the foundation of our historical and cultural awareness.
Long-form improv is perfectly suited to help our middle school students understand the structure, arc, and entertainment of story. Where short-form improv creates a new scene every few minutes, long-form challenges students to revisit characters, situations and themes in an on-going spontaneous story, creating a single improvised "play" each performance.
Everyone is a storyteller and everyone can become a good one. Here are some of the simple skills that will be exercised to achieve this: Active Listening, Attention to Detail, Making Connections Between Ideas, Identifying Main Themes - both unique and universal (or as we say in improv, "finding the game").
In our welcoming and nurturing classrooms, THE LAUGHING ACADEMY embraces the basic lesson of improv - which is that there are no wrong answers. In this environment, students are free to embrace their amazing individuality, and build confidence in their own ideas and instincts while still respecting the perspective and contributions of others.
In addition to building self-esteem, creativity, teamwork, and listening skills, this class will help students get better at understanding and expressing their feelings, and gain greater empathy for the experiences of others – all while having loads of fun and blowing off steam.
We'll help your child understand and appreciate all the unique things that make them so awesome, and build the courage to make their own mark on the world!
All camps and classes are masked and socially distanced. We have been running learning pods and classes over the last several months and are practiced at maintaining safety during this unusual time.
