Class Experience

Throughout history, people have used myth as a form of storytelling to understand the world and each other. This workshop will explore three characteristics common to mythological story-telling: tricksters, monsters, and constellations. Students will encounter stories beyond the Greek and Roman mythology with which they may already be familiar and will learn to see mythology as a representation of human universality. Along the way, we’ll examine both myth and work that myth has clearly influenced, and we will practice the techniques we learn to write our own myth-inspired prose and poetry. Students will come out of the workshop with the understanding that myths are actually true in many ways because they tell us what it’s like to be human.
