We hold upper elementary Art Treks (grades 3rd-5th) on most public school holidays. Young artists take public transportation to a museum, gallery, or artist's studio to observe, discuss, and create work back in The Painted Cloud studio based on the theme of the workshop. Young artists should plan for being outdoors, taking the train or bus, snack and lunch.

Surrealism & Fact
(PERCEPTION(s) OF REALITY(ties))
Perceptions - we create new ones everyday, whether imagined or based in real life! This camp, young artists will investigate daily perceptions through one-of-a-kind drawings, paintings, collages and prints. This week, young artists' dreamlike musings will come to life as they explore the idea of layering; combining immediate thoughts with action driven techniques such as relief printmaking, collaging and automatic drawing! We will discuss the concepts of automatism and intention as young artists create projects including Masks, Wands, Optical Illusion Collages, Dream Catchers, Finger Puppets, and Yves Tanguy Monochrome Watercolor Paintings. For inspiration, we will be looking at the works of Unica Zürn and Paul Klee, and how they implement immediate thoughts and observations to create fantastic illusions!

Following our morning choice time at The Painted Cloud, our 3rd-5th graders will go on Art Treks to the following locations:
Atlas Cafe near The Painted Cloud, The Rubelle and Norman Schafler Gallery at Pratt in Brooklyn, A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, Janet Borden Inc. in Brooklyn, "Call and Response" at NurtureART Gallery in Brooklyn, Shin Gallery in Manhattan.

Upon their return, we will have project time and reconvene with all of our young artists to observe and discuss what we’ve created, laughed about, and learned.
