This class meets at the intersection of art and environmentalism. We will learn about various ways that contemporary artists address the environment, ecological crisis, and climate justice in their work, and we will incorporate these broader themes and strategies as inspiration for our own art. Topics include future visioning, industrial critique, our relationship with the earth, and working with sustainable materials. The class is based on cultivating 2D work; however artists who are proficient in any medium may join. For each class, bring something to paint or draw on, and something to paint or draw with (this can be as simple as sketch paper and colored pencils, or your favorite painting supplies).
Notes on Materials:
- If using acrylic or oil, a surface to paint on per class; either canvas, wood panel, or gessoed cardboard. If using watercolor, a sheet of watercolor paper per class. If selecting drawing media, a sheet of drawing paper per class.

- Paints - Recommended colors:
1. warm red (cadmium red - look for non-cadmium formula, vermillion or pyrrol scarlet)
2. cool red (alizarin crimson, carmine, or quinacridone rose)
3. warm blue (phthalo or cerulean)
4. cool blue (ultramarine)
5. yellow (hansa yellow, azo yellow, cadmium yellow - look for non-cadmium formula, or permanent yellow)
6. warm brown (burnt sienna or ochre)
7. cool brown (sepia brown or burnt umber)
8. white (titanium or zinc)
- Brushes: a variety is great, but a small round brush (size 1, 2, or 3) and a medium round brush (size 6, 7, or 8) would be most versatile.
- Water container
- Rags or paper towels
- Paper palette or white palette
- Optional: Palette knife for acrylic or oil
- Optional: Solvent for oil paints (if using oils, please come to class with prior knowledge on how to care for oils and their proper disposal)
