Class Experience

S.P.O.T.S: Supporting Peoples Outlooks, Talents, and Speech
Muralism, Actions, and Community Activations
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2pm to 4 pm

The painting spot, the gathering spot, the spot light or epicenter of action.

Public art is a powerful tool for community building. This program will introduce young artists to the means to create vibrant community art works. A cohort of twelve young artists (ages 12-24) will learn about different models of community art projects, help to define how the program will local youth, and create a collaborative mural project.

This program will focus on designing and painting a community mural through a collaborative process. Students will learn basic color theory, composition, and painting methods.

Week 1
July 6: Intro to Program: View examples of similar projects, murals, and public art works. Create a list of outcomes that empower young artists. How do you want this program to perform? Should we invite community to help paint the mural?

July 8: Brainstorm ideas, sketch, do research, develop themes.
Write a collective statement of what we envision for this program now and in the future.

Week 2
July 13: Guest Artist TBA. Develop Black and White Sketch of mural. Prime and grid wall.

July 15: Start Color version. Color in murals presentation of examples of color and composition. Write a mural narrative. Grid Black and White composite. Continue to color main version.

Week 3
July 20: Guest Artist TBA

July 22: Finish color composite. Present drawing to community stakeholders.

Week 4
July 27: First day of Painting. Block in background. Invite community to paint?

July 29: Continue to block in painting.

Week 5
August 3: Guest Artist TBA

August 5: Finishing up, focus on details.

Week 6
August 10: Guest Artist TBA. Touch ups, varnish mural, add credits.

August 12: Community Celebration! Food and music. Activities for community?


This is a six week class that is designed for youth ages 12-24 who live and work in Richmond. Each student will receive a $200 stipend for their work at the completion of the program. This class welcomes Spanish speakers and is an inclusive bilingual space. El Artista Maestro habla Español.
