A hands-on restoration field trip for 4th and 5th graders. Students learn how native plants create habitat for wildlife, build healthier soil, and conserve water.
The day starts with a walk to meet the plants that live here and learn to tell natives from non-natives. Students then rotate through two to three work stations.
Tasks change with the season: harvesting native wildflower and grass seed, building straw-bale garden beds, planting seed or plugs (spring), digging, raking, mulching, and restoring a creekbed with gravel, rocks, and logs. Every class leaves the land a little healthier than it found it.
Classes may stay up to one hour after the program for lunch and nature play.
