Class Experience

Each week, we introduce a different project based on a big architectural topic like "treehouses" or "a Viking village". We present real and unbuilt work, fantasy drawings, art and sculpture that inspire our students to create their own concepts and build their own model to express their ideas.

What you'll learn

Wicked Workshop is a maker-based program that introduces youth to architecture through reality-based projects that tackle "wicked" problems like inadequate housing and environmental health (things architects do every day!).

We teach:

  • decision-making strategies
  • complex problem solving
  • critical thinking methods
  • independent thinking
  • self-directed learning
  • exploration
  • iteration and
  • creativity.

Modelled after the university architecture school experience, we teach the design process through a straightforward hands-on curriculum based on authentic projects with a fantasical flare.

Sample Class Format

Each class starts with a short (10-12 minute) video that introduces the project and inspiration.  We bring a bunch of crazy materials (all materials are included) and make suggestions on modelling techniques. We do not teach through step-by-step "how-to" instruction.  Rather, each student is coached toward building their own version of the project in a unique way that is meaningful to them.

Wicked Workshop understands that sometimes expectations and reality don't line up. If your child finds themselves unhappy, dissatisfied or otherwise unable to continue in our program, we will gladly refund any fees paid for future classes.

What To Bring

  • We will be on site at 3:00 and are aware of the staggered release schedule.  We will start right after school once we have everyone assembled. Students will be allowed to play on the playground until our class time.
  • We will divide into two classes based on grade (1st-3rd) and (4th-6th) assuming enrollment is at least 4-5 students per grade group.  In the case of lower enrollment, we will combine into one class.
  • Please send a snack with your child
  • A growth-mindset: We encourage our students to invent their own methods of connection and design, which they are entirely capable of doing when given the time, space, support and inspiration.
  • Realistic Expectations: Parents should expect to see some masterpieces, some failures and everything in between.  Creating your own project based on a new topic with materials you've never used before can sometimes be a challenge.  We focus on the process of thinking through these challenges - not the end product.
  • Your Listening Ears: Our best advice? Ask your child to talk about what they made! Then, step back and listen to the magic unfold.
