Class Experience

In collaboration with Lincoln Hills Cares, we are hosting an outdoor Family Day at the Lincoln Hills historic resort.

Lincoln Hills Family Day will include navigation and fly-fishing lessons, as well as an historic hike that’ll help us re-imagine outdoor recreation and what it looked like in the time of segregation. Snacks and gear will be provided, and there are restrooms available on-site. BYO lunch.

In its time, the Lincoln Hills resort was the only option for African American folks to stay in the area. At the height of its popularity, Lincoln Hills offered retreat-style lodging and amenities, as well as an escape from widespread and accepted racism and segregation. While known for its notable guests from the Harlem Renaissance era, that included Duke Ellington, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Lena Horne, Lincoln Hills was also a popular recreation destination for many Black residents and travelers.

Location: Lincoln Hills Cares, 655 Pactolus Lake Rd., Black Hawk, CO

Details: The location is 1.5 hours from Denver and 1 hour from Boulder, so please plan travel accordingly. You’ll receive directions to Lincoln Hills Cares when you register. No experience is necessary. All events will be open to and suitable for families as well as individual adults.
