Description

The Quilts of Gee’s Bend are a collection of colorful patchwork quilts created by a group of women and their ancestors who lived in the isolated hamlet of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The town’s women developed a distinctive, bold, and sophisticated quilting style based on traditional American (and African American) quilts, but with a geometric simplicity reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern art.

In this course, we will create our own patchwork quilts from fabric scraps and old clothing, while learning the history of quilting while doing so. Students will come away with skills such as rotary cutting fabric, piecing a quilt, and hand quilting a finished product to take home.
